Confined, Desirous of salvation, Liberated and Eternally liberated- these are the four categories of human beings who come for an earth journey, so far as human evolution and destiny is concerned.
The fourth one is the rarest of all human beings. They do not desire to be born for themselves. They are the descends of God/Brahma/One heavenly father. They are not incarnations because incarnation means born out of blood and flesh. They come and stay within the womb of their mother for themselves, they are abiogenetic. They come to teach the process of liberation to the entire human race. Their love for humanity is like flood, which engulfs every corner with boundless sway.
Rabi, Rabindranath Chattopadhyay (Bhattacharya), Rabinarayan Brahmachari or Paramahamsa Hariharananda, was such a rarest extraordinary divine human being. Usually they choose to be born in a highly spiritual family. They choose pious parents and the place which is already a pilgrimage due to many descends of God.
West Bengal a state of India has given birth to innumerable spiritual personalities, poets, liberators, scientists, artists and patriots. Within West Bengal there is a small district called Nadia which has given birth to many spiritual personalities including Avatars, to mention with:
1. Krittibas Ojha – Fulia, 1381-1461
2. Shri Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu – Nabadwip, 1486-1534
3. Yogiraj Shri Shyamacharan Lahiri – Ghurni, 1828-1895
4. Shree Bijoy Krishna Goswami – Shantipur, 1841-1899
5. Shrimat Bhupendra Nath Sanyal- Sadhanpara, 1877-1962
6. Shree Nigamananda- Kutubpur (now in Bangladesh), 1880-1935
7. Paramahamsa Hariharananda- Habibpur, 1907-2002
Nadia is a land of God.
Father Haripada and mother Nabinkali were highly spiritual. This family was financially affluent. They were zaminders, highly educated, especially in Sanskrit scriptures and performed the duty of priest for which they attracted the title Bhattacharya.
Gurudev was born on a very auspicious day- Buddha Purnima, on 27th May 1907.
When God desires to descend, he comes with definite signs. So in case of Gurudev, one day when his mother Nabinkali went for a bath in pond, a tulasi leaf got attached to her naval and subsequently she felt that a light got absorbed in her whole body. On listening to the fact Haripada declared that an extraordinary divine personality is about to come to their house.
The child was named Rabindranath. He possessed an exceptional intellect and memory and love for every individual. Only at the age of four he memorized all the mantras of worship including scriptures. In the year 1918, at the age of 11 years Rabi was given Upanayan, the sacred thread ceremony. Just after Upanayan, Rabi requested his father to provide him with Mantra Diksha and declared that unless he is given the same, he would start a hunger strike. So his father was compelled to quench the son with a Mantra and became his first Guru.
In the year 1919, he was initiated into janayoga by their Kula Guru Shri Bijoy Krishna Chattopadhyay.
He was a student of Pal Chowdhury School at Ranaghat, near to his village Habibpur, Nadia, West Bengal, India. After finishing his schooling he joined Textile Engineering College in Shreerampore and had his degree in Textile Engineering. He joined Mohini Mills as an engineer. His family members and relatives wanted him to get married but he never agreed to the proposal.
One day he asked his Gurudev Shri Bijoy Krishna Chattopadhyay to guide him into the technique of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Shri Bijoy Kishna Chattopadyay told him, for this he has to learn the technique of Kriya Yoga and Rabi was sent to Shriyukteswarji.
In the year 1932, he got initiated into Kriya Yoga and Shriyukteswarji said that in a small seed there remains a dormant big tree. Likewise you are to reveal yourself. In 1935, he met his senior religious brother Pramahamsa Yogananda at 4, Garpar Road, Calcutta. Rabinarayan wanted to see Nirvikalpa Samadhi from Yoganandaji. Before the Samadhi was demonstrated, Yoganandaji asked Rabi how much time Rabi could provide for Kriya Yoga. Rabi answered that not mere hours or days, he can sacrifice his entire life for the cause of Kriya Yoga.
In the year 1936, Rabninarayan lost his Guru Shriyukteswarji and Yoganandaji left for U.S.A., he became alone. Before his Mahasamdhi, Shriyukteswarji instructed Rabi to join Karar Ashram, Yoganandaji also requested Rabi the same. Accordingly, Rabi started the life of a Brahmachari at Karar Ashram from the year 1938 and his rigorous activity started. On one hand looking after Ashram, school, students, social activities and on the other hand deep meditation for the whole night.
Between 1940 to 1945 he completed all the six stages of Kriya Sadhana. Paramahamsa Yogananda, Swami Satyananda Giri, Shrimat Bhupendranath Sanyal were his preceptors.
1945 to 1948 was the golden period of his sadhana, when he could master the process of entering into Nirvikalpa Samadhi. An unknown young Yogi helped him to master the process.
This is one of the rare fact that at an early age of 40, he could master the process of Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
Normally, if a spiritual practitioner enters into Nirvikalpa Samadhi, it is obvious that he has to leave his physical body within 21 days. Many of us have seen the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi of Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda many a times. But Gurudev Hariharananda lived till 95 years of his age. This is a rarest phenomenon in the spiritual history. Descends of God have this unique quality.
In the year 1949, Babaji Maharaj was very kind enough to appear before Gurudev at Karar Ashram.
In 1951- he was declared as Yogacharya by Paramahamsa Yoganandaji.
On 1959, 27th May, Jagatguru Sankaracharya Bharati Krishna Tirtha ordained him into the monastic order and his name was Hariharananda Giri. In the same year, Gurudev had the vision of Babaji Maharaj at Ranikhet for the third occasion.
From 1960 to 1973, innumerable persons came to him for salvation through Kriya Yoga.
In the year 1971, he delivered his speech being invited at World Congress of Religion in USA.
In the year 1971, he was given the charge of Sadhu Sabhapati of Karar Ashram.
The year 1974 and onwards Hariharananda started traveling the west world for spreading the message and initiating people into Kriya Yoga. Many invitations from the west world and his Guru’s wish compelled him to travel to Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherland, Belgium, England, Canada, U.S.A. and South America. Gurudev personally did not like to travel to west. Here was a great role of Brahmarshi Raghabananda to force him to preach and teach Kriya Yoga to the West. Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda once disclosed to Raghabananda that spiritual person like him, usually descends once in 500 years. So Raghabananda insisted Gurudev that the human race should get the benefit of his love, compassion and teaching and hence Gurudev should travel the entire world. He set up meditation centers at different multiple locations as mentioned above.
As Paramahamsa Yogananda complemented the work of Swami Vivekananda, thus Paramahamsa Hariharananda complemented the works of Paramahamsa Yogananda.
In India also he established many meditation centers and millions of people came under the umbrella of Kriya Yoga. He used to love all equally and hence had to travel to everywhere periodically. His every action, through talk, gesture and lecture was a message of Kriya Yoga only.
In the year 1996 he left from Dum Dum, Calcutta (Kolkata) and till 2002 he stayed at Miami, Florida in U.S.A.
He said “My life is a complete one.”
Everyone wants to rest on his mother’s lap at the zenith of his life. Gurudev too had a tremendous desire to come back to his motherland but his extreme old age stood as a hindrance to his wish.
He entered into Mahasamadhi on 3rd December 2002 at Miami U.S.A. His divine body was flown to India and kept in permanent rest in Puri, India. Like Shrichaitanya Mahaprabhu, he was also born in Nadia, did his Lila in Puri and final Samadhi in Puri.
As Shrichaitanya Mahaprabhu flooded everywhere with the love and compassion of Harinam, likewise Paramahamsa Hariharananda our Gurudev flooded the Globe with the love and compassion of the scientific technique of Kriya Yoga.
He said “My life is only meant to serve you all, not to be served. I have born only to give you salvation through the most scientific technique of Kriya Yoga which is based on the principle of shortest breath. With short breath you watch him constantly on the top of your head (to be learnt from a Guru or Yogacharya). This is the way- you can feel the constant touch of God which will lead you to constant liberation. I have given you predigested food, you just swallow it. This is a rarest opportunity and opportunity must not be neglected because it may not return. Realisation and liberation through knowing thyself is your birthright, so do not waste time, be realised now. If you are not realised in this life, your life is wasted.”
