SWAMI SHRIYUKTESWAR GIRI
Shri Priyanath Karar, later known as Swami Shriyukteswar Giri, was born on 10th May 1855 at Shreerampore, West Bengal. His house was very adjacent to the river Ganges. He was a very good student. After his successful schooling he joined medical school Calcutta (Kolkata) and continued his medical education for two years, he learned the human anatomy and physiology very keenly to know the inner aspects of a human being. His father was Kshetranath, a very rich businessman, his mother was Kadambini Devi. As far the wish of his mother Priyanath got married and became a house holder. His quest for knowledge continued specially medical, astrology, astronomy and self knowledge.
His quest for knowing self lead him to come in contact with his Guru Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasaya. He was initiated on 19th August 1883. He always used to get absorbed into God consciousness. It was due to his extreme desire and deep meditation, he attained the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
Priyanath completed all the duties of his life very perfectly. He was married, had a daughter. In 1901, while going to Puri on pilgrimage his wife breathed her last. So Priyanath had to perform both the duties of mother and father towards his daughter and at the same time he was to take care of his widow mother.
After the marriage of his daughter, his social bindings were less and Priyanath could devote more time for astrology and meditation.
In 1894 Priyanath went to kumbha mela at Allahabad where he came in contact with Mahavatar Babaji Maharaj. In this meeting he got instruction to enter into a life of sanyasi. He also got instruction regarding cosmic astrology and spreading kriya yoga to the West World.
In 1901 he went to Puri and on 22nd March 1903 he founded The Kara Ashram on vernal equinox day. On Gurupurnima Day of 1906 he was initiated into the order of Giri Sanyasa by Swami Krishnadayal Giri.
Shriyukteswarji initiated our Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharanandaji, the then known as Rabindranath into kriya yoga in 1932. Shriyukteswarji entered into Mahasamadhi 9th March 1946. Some prominent disciples of him are Paramahamsa Yogananda, Akshaykumar Bhattacharya, Swami Satyananda, Amulyacharan Santra, Narayan Ch. Ganguly, Swami Bhavananda Giri, Paramahamsa Hariharananda and many more.
